1. In 1885, the first public hospital in Nevada, the Nevada State Hospital, opened on November 9th in Reno. It was initially constructed to house mental patients.

2. On November 9, 1938, the El Rancho Vegas casino resort, which is considered as the first ever resort-casino in Las Vegas, was opened. The hotel eventually became famous for being the first to offer topless shows.

3. In 1877, on November 9th, the Nevada State Journal newspaper was established in Reno, Nevada. The paper is still in operation today, making it one of the oldest running newspapers in Nevada.

4. On November 9, 1967, a tragic plane crash occurred in Virginia City, Nevada that killed all passengers on board. Among the deceased was the famous musician Otis Redding who was killed just three days after recording the iconic song "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay".

5. On November 9, 2004, a controversial ballot measure in Nevada called the Marriage Protection Amendment was passed. It defined marriage as being solely between a man and a woman, thereby outlawing same-sex marriages in Nevada. The measure was later annulled by the Supreme Court of Nevada in 2014.
