3. On November 9, 1889, South Carolina state senator Benjamin R. Tillman led a group of white supremacists in the attack on the black neighborhood of Hamburg, known as the Hamburg Massacre. The attack left several people dead and led to increased racial tensions in the state.

4. In 1894, the South Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now Clemson University) was established on November 9. It was originally founded as an all-white, all-male military school.
