1. In 1953, the University of South Carolina was desegregated when African American student Henrie Monteith, along with two other students, successfully enrolled in the university after a legal battle.

2. The Civil War Battle of Parker's Crossroads took place on November 9, 1864. Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest led his troops in a surprise attack on Union forces, resulting in a Confederate victory.

3. On November 9, 1889, South Carolina state senator Benjamin R. Tillman led a group of white supremacists in the attack on the black neighborhood of Hamburg, known as the Hamburg Massacre. The attack left several people dead and led to increased racial tensions in the state.

4. In 1894, the South Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now Clemson University) was established on November 9. It was originally founded as an all-white, all-male military school.

5. The first intercollegiate football game in South Carolina was played on November 9, 1895, between Furman University and the University of South Carolina. The game ended in a scoreless tie.
