1. Nevada's Admission to the Union: On October 12, 1864, Nevada was officially admitted to the Union as the 36th state. At the time, Nevada was the largest state in the country, but it had a small population of just over 40,000 people.

2. Women's Suffrage: On October 12, 1914, Nevada became the 12th state to grant women the right to vote, six years before the 19th Amendment was passed.

3. The Hoover Dam: Construction on the Hoover Dam began on October 12, 1931. It took five years to build the dam, and it was completed in 1936. The Hoover Dam is still one of the largest and most iconic dams in the world.

4. Atomic Testing: On October 12, 1957, the first underground nuclear test was conducted at the Nevada Test Site. Over the course of several decades, hundreds of nuclear weapons were tested in Nevada.

5. Tragic Plane Crash: On October 12, 1944, a military transport plane crashed into the side of Mount Charleston outside of Las Vegas. All 24 people on board were killed, and the wreckage was not discovered until four months later. The passengers included soldiers, nurses, and civilians. It remains one of the worst air disasters in Nevada history.
