1. Formation of the University of North Dakota
On October 14, 1883, the University of North Dakota was established. This public research university is located in Grand Forks and is the oldest institution of higher education in the state.

2. Elevator Explosion in Grand Forks
One of the worst elevator explosions in history occurred in Grand Forks on October 14, 1914. At least 20 individuals were killed and others injured when an elevator exploded at the National Milling Company.

3. Formation of the North Dakota National Guard
