1. In 1790, the Virginia Gazette reported on a speech given by the Governor of Virginia, Beverley Randolph, to the Virginia Assembly in Richmond. Randolph discussed the state's growing economy and the need for continued investment in infrastructure like roads and bridges.

2. On October 15, 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early launched a surprise attack on Union forces at the Battle of Cedar Creek. Despite initial success, Early's troops were ultimately defeated by Union reinforcements led by General Philip Sheridan. The battle marked a turning point in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of the American Civil War.

3. In 1900, construction began on the Virginia State Capitol building in Richmond. Designed by Thomas Jefferson, the building is now a National Historic Landmark and serves as the home of Virginia's General Assembly.

4. On October 15, 1924, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts opened its doors to the public. Located in Richmond, the museum's collection features over 35,000 works of art from around the world, including ancient artifacts, modern paintings, and contemporary installations.

5. In 1982, the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) accepted its first female cadet, Jeanne Holm. Holm went on to become the first woman in the United States Air Force to achieve the rank of Major General. Today, women make up around 10% of VMI's cadet population.
