1. In 1861, the University of Denver was founded in Colorado. It is a private research university with a strong emphasis on ethics and social responsibility.

2. In 1907, the Pike's Peak Cog Railway completed construction and began carrying passengers up to the top of Pike's Peak. This was the first cog railway built in the United States and is still in operation today.

3. In 1933, the first ski lift in America was built in Idaho Springs, Colorado. It was called the "uplift" and could carry four skiers at a time up the mountain.

4. In 1969, the first two women were sworn in as police officers in Denver. They were Barbara E. Archer and Mary Lou (Conley) Gonzales.

5. In 1992, the National League Colorado Rockies, a Major League Baseball team, was awarded to Denver. The team played their first game in 1993 and has been a popular attraction for Colorado sports fans ever since.
