1. In 1865, the town of Fryeburg was incorporated. It is located in Oxford County and is known for its historic Fryeburg Fair, which is held annually in early October and is one of the largest agricultural fairs in Maine.
2. On October 2, 1910, the Great Fire of 1910, also known as the Big Blowup, reached the state of Maine. The wildfire was one of the largest in U.S. history and burned over three million acres in the Pacific Northwest.
3. In 1963, the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) was established as a statewide institution offering associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. Today, UMA is one of seven campuses in the University of Maine System.
4. On October 2, 1980, the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland opened its doors to the public. The museum is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of American art and has a large collection of works by Maine artists, including Andrew Wyeth and Louise Nevelson.
5. In 1996, the Maine Mariners hockey team was founded and began play in the American Hockey League. The team played at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland until it was disbanded in 2001. However, in 2018 a new Maine Mariners team was established and continues to play at the Civic Center today.
