1. On October 20, 1870, Minnesota state legislature passed a law allowing women to vote in school district elections. This made Minnesota one of the first states to grant women's suffrage in some form.

2. In 1922, the first radio station in Minnesota, WCCO, began broadcasting from Minneapolis on October 20th. It became a popular station for news, sports, and entertainment, and is still on the air today.

3. On October 20, 1977, three members of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed in a plane crash near Gillsburg, Mississippi. One of the members, Steve Gaines, was born in Seneca Township, Minnesota.

4. In 1987, the Minnesota Twins won their first World Series championship on October 20th, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7. This was the first major sports championship for the state of Minnesota.

5. On October 20, 2018, the Somali-American politician Ilhan Omar was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Minnesota's 5th congressional district. She became the first Somali-American woman to serve in Congress, and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress.
