1. In 1861, Union soldiers in Santa Fe, New Mexico were defeated by Confederate soldiers during the Battle of Santa Fe. This was the first Confederate victory in the western United States.

2. In 1914, the first women's golf championship in New Mexico was held at the Rosedale Country Club in Albuquerque. The event was won by Mabel Rilling.

3. On October 23, 1928, the first flight from Albuquerque to Tucumcari was made by Western Air Express (later known as Western Airlines). This was an important step in the development of New Mexico's aviation industry.

4. In 1970, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science opened in Albuquerque. The museum houses exhibits about the natural history of New Mexico and the southwest, including dinosaur fossils.

5. On October 23, 2005, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta set a new world record for the most hot air balloons launching at the same time. A total of 1,000 balloons took flight, filling the sky with color and creating a spectacular sight for onlookers.
