1. In 1861, the Kamehameha IV (Alexander Liholiho) and Queen Emma founded the Queen's Hospital in Honolulu, which is still in operation today as The Queen's Medical Center.
2. In 1926, the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium was dedicated in Honolulu. The saltwater swimming pool and memorial were built to honor soldiers from Hawaii who served in World War I.
3. On October 24, 1944, the USS Tang submarine was sunk by her own torpedo in the Formosa Strait during World War II. Four of the crew members survived and were taken as prisoners of war.
4. In 1954, Hilo High School in Hawaii began offering Hawaiian language classes, making it the first public school in the state to do so. Today, Hawaiian is taught in many schools throughout Hawaii.
5. In 1974, the state of Hawaii's Disaster Preparedness Agency implemented a test of the Emergency Alert System, which included the activation of air-raid sirens and a radio message announcing a simulated nuclear missile attack. This event became known as the "Great Hawaii False Alarm."
