3. In 1913, the first transcontinental phone call was made from the Worth Monument in Baltimore. Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone, was present for the historic event, which connected New York City with San Francisco.

4. On October 24, 1945, the United Nations officially came into existence with the ratification of its charter by the majority of its member states. The first meeting of the UN General Assembly was held in London, with representatives from 51 countries in attendance.
