1. In 1864, Nevada became the 36th state to join the United States of America after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Nevada Statehood Act. October 27 is now celebrated as Nevada Day, a statewide holiday.

2. In 1905, the first concrete was poured for the construction of the Hoover Dam. The dam was completed in 1935 and is still a popular tourist attraction today.

3. In 1946, mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The hotel was the first luxury hotel on the Las Vegas Strip and set the standard for future casinos.

4. In 1962, the first nuclear test conducted under the Partial Test Ban Treaty was performed at the Nevada Test Site. The treaty limited nuclear testing to underground and underwater locations to reduce the risk of radioactive fallout.

5. In 2016, the Oakland Raiders announced plans to relocate to Las Vegas for the 2020 NFL season. The move was approved by NFL owners in March 2017 and the team will begin playing in the newly-constructed Allegiant Stadium in 2020.
