1. In 1903, the Wright brothers made their first successful powered flight. The brothers, originally from Dayton, Ohio, came to the Outer Banks of North Carolina because of its favorable winds and sandy environment. On October 28, they successfully flew their Flyer for 39 seconds and covered a distance of 852 feet.
2. In 1963, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte was established. Originally called Charlotte College, it was founded to provide affordable higher education to the growing population in the Charlotte area. It has since grown to become the third-largest university in the UNC System.
3. In 2009, the North Carolina Zoo welcomed a new addition to their family: a baby gorilla. The western lowland gorilla was named Bomassa and weighed in at 4.5 pounds. He was the first gorilla born at the zoo in over a decade.
4. In 1864, the Battle of Fair Oaks and Darbytown Road was fought during the Civil War. The Confederate Army, led by General Robert E. Lee, launched a surprise attack on the Union Army, but were ultimately repelled. The battle resulted in over 1,200 casualties.
5. In 2017, the North Carolina Courage won their first National Women’s Soccer League Championship. The team, based in Cary, North Carolina, was founded in 2017 after the Western New York Flash were sold and relocated. They won the championship in their first season, defeating the Portland Thorns 1-0.
