1. In 1864, Idaho Territory was established by President Abraham Lincoln. This paved the way for the eventual statehood of Idaho in 1890.
2. In 1927, the world's largest cedar tree was felled in Idaho. The tree stood over 178 feet tall and had a circumference of over 62 feet.
3. In 1930, the state's first radio station, KFXD, broadcast its first program from Boise. KFXD is still operating today and is one of the oldest radio stations in Idaho.
4. In 1962, the Idaho State Penitentiary closed its doors after 101 years of operation. The prison is now a museum and serves as a popular tourist attraction.
5. In 2005, the discovery of a 133-million-year-old fossil of a dinosaur was made in eastern Idaho. The skeletal remains of the newly discovered species, nicknamed the "Idaho dinosaur," were found in the Cloverly Formation in Bonneville County.
