1. In 1938, the U.S. government officially renamed the Washington National Airport as the "Washington National Airport" to honor the first president of the United States, George Washington, who was born on February 22.
2. In 1964, the Washington Senators baseball team moved to Texas to become the Texas Rangers. The franchise was revived in 2005 as the Washington Nationals.
3. In 1974, the U.S. Capitol was declared a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service.
4. In 1983, the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C. witnessed an attack that killed 241 U.S. Marines and sailors. The attack was carried out by suicide bombers using vehicles loaded with explosives.
5. In 2009, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History unveiled a new exhibit titled "The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden." The exhibit featured more than 900 artifacts related to the U.S. presidency, including the top hat worn by Abraham Lincoln at his second inauguration.
