1. Arizona officially became a state on October 31, 1912. This made it the 48th state in the United States.
2. On October 31, 1931, legendary Arizona cowboy and rodeo performer, Tom Mix, was involved in a car accident near Florence that claimed his life. Mix was known for his daring stunts and starring roles in numerous western films.
3. The Phoenix Suns, Arizona's professional basketball team, played their first regular season game on October 31, 1968. The team defeated the Seattle SuperSonics 116-107.
4. On October 31, 2005, Arizona State University installed two large solar panels on the roof of their Memorial Union Building. These panels were designed to provide renewable energy for the building and were the first major solar project for the university.
5. The Phoenix Art Museum opened its doors on October 31, 1959, featuring a collection of more than 4,500 works of art. Today, the museum is home to over 20,000 works of art from around the world.
