1. Hurricane King Devastates Key West (1950)
On October 4, 1950, Hurricane King hit Key West and caused extensive damage to the island. The storm had winds of up to 130 mph and a storm surge that flooded the streets with several feet of water. The hurricane destroyed more than 500 homes and claimed six lives.

2. Hurricane Opal Slams Into the Panhandle (1995)
Another devastating hurricane hit Florida on October 4, 1995. Hurricane Opal made landfall near Pensacola with winds of up to 150 mph. The storm caused more than $3 billion in damages and claimed 59 lives.

One of Florida's most famous authors, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, published her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Yearling" on October 4, 1938. The book tells the story of a young boy living in the backwoods of Florida and his relationship with a pet fawn.

5. Mary McLeod Bethune Joins FDR's Cabinet (1935)
On October 4, 1935, Mary McLeod Bethune, a prominent African-American educator and civil rights leader, was appointed to the cabinet of President Franklin D. Roosevelt as the Director of the Division of Negro Affairs. She was the first African American woman to hold such an influential position in the federal government.
