1. In 1777, British soldiers occupied Newport, Rhode Island. This occupation lasted for three years until American forces, under the leadership of General Rochambeau, successfully forced the British to retreat.
2. On October 4, 1783, the first air balloon in North America made its debut flight in Newport. The balloon, piloted by Frenchman Jean-Pierre Blanchard, soared to an altitude of 6,000 feet and traveled approximately six miles before landing safely in Cumberland.
3. In 1851, the first state fair in Rhode Island was held in Providence. The event, which featured agricultural exhibits, livestock competitions, and horse races, was attended by thousands of people from across the state.
4. On October 4, 1927, the Newport Casino hosted the first ever International Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The inaugural class included tennis legends such as William Renshaw, Richard Sears, and Holcombe Ward.
5. In 2015, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo declared October 4th "Child Health Day" in the state. The proclamation aimed to raise awareness for children's health issues and promote healthy lifestyles for Rhode Island families.
