1. In 1810, the first influx of Anglo-American settlers came to Louisiana during the West Florida Rebellion. The rebellion was an attempt to assert American control over the territory east of the Mississippi River, which included most of present-day Louisiana.
2. In 1882, a Louisiana hurricane made landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The storm caused an estimated 500 to 700 deaths, mostly in the coastal areas of Louisiana and Texas.
3. On October 6, 1908, Louisiana State University (LSU) dedicated its new football stadium, which was then known as State Field. The stadium later became known as Tiger Stadium and has since undergone numerous renovations to become one of the most iconic college football venues in the country.
4. In 1927, a flood devastated large parts of Louisiana, including the city of New Orleans. The flood was caused by heavy rains upstream, which caused the Mississippi River to overflow its banks. The flood caused an estimated $1.5 billion in damage and killed over 500 people.
5. On October 6, 1980, Marie Corinne Morrison Claiborne, better known as Mary Landrieu, was elected to the United States Congress to represent Louisiana's 1st congressional district. Landrieu went on to serve in the Senate as well, becoming the first woman from Louisiana to hold that position.
