1. In 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed, officially ending the Revolutionary War and recognizing the independence of the United States. This momentous occasion is significant to New Jersey history as many battles and events took place in the state during the war, including the Battle of Princeton in 1777.
2. The groundbreaking ceremony for the George Washington Bridge, connecting New Jersey and New York, took place on October 6, 1927. At the time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world and remains an iconic symbol of transportation in the region.
3. In 1930, the first football game was played at the newly constructed Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway, NJ. The home team, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, defeated Princeton 26-0 in the inaugural game. Today, the stadium is known as High Point Solutions Stadium and serves as the home field for Rutgers football.
4. On October 6, 1981, the New Jersey Devils played their first game in franchise history at the Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford. Despite losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-6, the Devils would go on to win their first Stanley Cup in 1995, bringing prestige to hockey in the state.
5. In 2015, the National Women's Soccer League announced that a new team, Sky Blue FC, would be playing their home games at Rutgers University's Yurcak Field beginning in the 2016 season. The team, which features several United States Women's National Team players, continues to call New Jersey home and aims to bring continued success to women's soccer in the state.
