1. In 1969, the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team defeated the Missouri Tigers 18-17 in a game famously known as the "Game of the Century." The game was played at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln and is considered one of the greatest college football games of all time.

2. On October 7, 1872, the Lincoln Opera House opened its doors for the first time in downtown Lincoln. The theater was a popular entertainment venue for many years, hosting everything from plays and concerts to political rallies and graduation ceremonies.

3. In 1887, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln held its first homecoming celebration. The event featured a parade, a football game, and a dance. Homecoming has since become a beloved tradition at the university and is celebrated every fall.

4. On this day in 1913, the city of Omaha officially opened its new city hall. The building was an impressive seven stories tall and housed all of the city's administrative offices. Today, the building still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

5. In 1942, the Lincoln Army Airfield was established just outside of Lincoln. The airfield was used for training pilots during World War II and played a crucial role in the war effort. After the war, the airfield was converted into Lincoln Municipal Airport, which is still in operation today.
