1. In 1965, the North Dakota State Capitol building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Designed by architect Joseph Bell DeRemer, the building was completed in 1934 and is one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the United States.
2. On October 8, 1949, the first football game was played at the newly constructed Dacotah Field in Grand Forks. The University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux defeated the Moorhead State Dragons 46-0.
3. North Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889, but on October 8 of that same year, President Benjamin Harrison signed the proclamation declaring North Dakota's statehood.
4. On October 8, 1895, the first Tabernacle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was dedicated in Fargo. The building served as a meeting place for local members until it was sold in the 1930s.
5. The Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra was established on October 8, 1923. Originally formed as the Fargo Civic Symphony, the orchestra has grown to become one of the leading cultural organizations in the region, performing a wide range of classical and contemporary music.
