The Salt Lake Temple, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Utah, began construction on October 9th, 1853. It was completed 40 years later in 1893.

On October 9th, 1979, the Utah Jazz won their first game as a franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA). They beat the Denver Nuggets 114-109 in their inaugural season.

The Great Utah ShakeOut is an annual event in which Utah residents participate in earthquake drills and preparedness exercises. It is held on October 9th each year to commemorate the anniversary of the 1962 magnitude 5.2 earthquake that shook the state.
