1. On September 10, 1891, the University of Wyoming opened its doors for the first time. The university was founded in 1886 as the Wyoming State Normal School, but it quickly grew into a full-fledged university.

2. In 1936, the JCPenney Company opened its first department store in Kemmerer, Wyoming, on September 10. The store was the first of what would become a nationwide chain of more than 1,000 stores.

3. On September 10, 1898, the first post office was established in Sheridan, Wyoming. Today, Sheridan is a bustling town of more than 17,000 people, and the post office remains an important part of the community.

4. In 1878, the famous outlaw "Kid Curry" was born in Curry, Wyoming (which was named after his family). Kid Curry was a member of the Wild Bunch gang, which was led by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

5. On September 10, 1907, the first auto race was held at the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo. The race was won by a car driven by J.D. Leech, who covered the one-mile track at an average speed of 70 miles per hour. Today, Cheyenne Frontier Days is one of the most popular rodeos in the country, and its auto races remain a crowd favorite.
