1. Missouri's Flag Lowering Order:
After September 11 attacks, Missouri Governor Bob Holden issued an order to lower the flags on all state buildings to half-staff until September 22 to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks.
2. Missouri's Rescue Team:
Missouri Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 deployed to New York City to help with the search-and-rescue efforts. The team was deployed for two weeks, and it consisted of firefighters, paramedics, engineers, doctors, and canines.
3. Missouri's 9/11 Memorials:
Missouri has several memorials dedicated to the 9/11 attacks victims. The Kansas City Firefighters Memorial Fountain displays the names of firefighters who have died in the line of duty, including those that were killed during the September 11 attacks. The Entrance Memorial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia contains a memorial plaque with the names of the victims from Missouri, and the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City also has a 9/11 exhibit.
4. Missouri's 9/11 Emergency Calls:
Missouri residents were among the thousands of people who called emergency services during the 9/11 attacks. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch documented several calls made to emergency services, which conveyed the confusion and fear of the callers after they witnessed the events of the day.
5. Missouri's Patriot Day:
In 2009, the Missouri State Legislature passed a joint resolution designating September 11 as Patriot Day in Missouri. The resolution encourages all Missourians to observe Patriot Day with a moment of silence and in remembrance of the lives lost during the 9/11 attacks. The resolution also honors the bravery and sacrifice of the first responders and military personnel who risked their lives to rescue victims and defend the country.
