1. In 1863, Quantrill's Raid occurred in Lawrence, Kansas. Led by Confederate guerrilla leader William Quantrill, around 300 men raided the town, killing over 150 men and boys and burning most of the buildings. It was one of the deadliest attacks of the Civil War.
2. On September 12, 1922, the University of Kansas Jayhawks played their first football game in their new stadium, Memorial Stadium. They defeated Washburn University 14-0.
3. In 1979, the first Miss America pageant to include contestants from all 50 states was held in Kansas. The pageant took place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, but the inclusion of all states was due to a rule change proposed by Miss Kansas, Deborah Bryant.
