1. In 1864, the infamous Battle of Mine Creek took place in Linn County, Kansas. It was one of the largest cavalry battles in the Civil War, with Union forces defeating Confederate troops and capturing over 600 prisoners.
2. On September 13, 1948, the University of Kansas opened its new football stadium, Memorial Stadium. The first game played there was against rival K-State, ending in a 20-6 victory for KU.
3. In 1959, the Kansas Turnpike opened to the public, running from Kansas City to Oklahoma. This 236-mile stretch of highway helped connect Kansas to the rest of the country, improving transportation and commerce.
4. On September 13, 1991, the "Perfect Storm" hit the Great Plains, with Kansas being one of the hardest-hit states. The storm caused widespread power outages, flooding, and damage to homes and businesses.
5. The National Teachers Hall of Fame was established in Emporia, Kansas, on September 13, 1989. It was created to recognize and honor outstanding teachers, and has inducted over 150 educators since its inception.
