5. Nevada native Jim Gibson was elected as the first mayor of Henderson, Nevada on September 13, 1988. Gibson served as Henderson's mayor from 1988 until 1997, and again from 1999 until 2009. Under his leadership, Henderson grew into one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States.
