1. In 1847, the first Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley on September 13. This event is commemorated annually as Pioneer Day in Utah.
2. On September 13, 1895, the cornerstone was laid for the Utah State Capitol building in Salt Lake City. The building was completed and dedicated in 1916.
3. In 1927, Utah's first airport officially opened in Salt Lake City on September 13. Today, Salt Lake City International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the western United States.
4. On September 13, 1958, the University of Utah Research Institute was officially established. The Institute is dedicated to research in various fields, and has been involved in a number of important projects over the years, including the development of the Mars Rover.
5. On September 13, 2007, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) held a special groundbreaking ceremony for its new conference center in Salt Lake City. The massive structure can seat over 21,000 people and is used for religious and cultural events.
