1. On September 14, 1814, the Battle of North Point took place south of Baltimore during the War of 1812. Maryland militia and soldiers fought against British troops, resulting in the death of Major General Robert Ross, a key British leader.

2. The Maryland state flag as it is known today was officially adopted on September 14, 1904. The flag features the coat of arms of the Calvert and Crossland families, who were instrumental in the founding and development of Maryland.

5. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused significant flooding in New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern United States. On September 14 of that year, Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich announced that the state would be contributing $1 million in emergency aid to help with recovery efforts.
