1. In 1963, the civil rights activist Medgar Evers spoke at Savannah State University to encourage students to continue fighting for equality and justice. Just a few months before, Evers had been assassinated in his own driveway in Mississippi, making his appearance at SSU even more poignant.

2. On September 15, 1821, the Treaty of Indian Springs was signed between the United States and the Creek Indians, allowing for the forced removal of the Creeks from Georgia. This agreement was deeply controversial, as it was signed by Chief William McIntosh without the approval of the Creek National Council.

3. One of Georgia's most beloved cultural events, the Georgia Peanut Festival, is held annually in Sylvester, Georgia. The festival began in 1961 and has grown to include a parade, live music, carnival rides, and more.

4. In 1830, Georgia passed legislation that required all white men between the ages of 18 and 45 to serve in the state militia, a move that was seen as particularly oppressive to those who were not wealthy enough to avoid military service.

5. September 15, 1959, saw the premiere of the hit television show, The Rifleman, starring Chuck Connors as a widowed father protecting his son and frontier town. Interestingly, the show was set in the fictitious town of North Fork, New Mexico, but was actually filmed in California.
