1. In 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, granting women the right to vote. Maine was one of the 36 states to ratify the amendment, which paved the way for women's suffrage throughout the United States.
2. On September 18, 1947, the Maine State Prison officially moved from Thomaston to Warren. The new facility was designed to better meet the needs of modern corrections, with improved security, medical care, and vocational training programs.
3. In 1973, the Maine State Legislature designated the third full week in September as "Maine Potato Blossom Festival Week." The festival, which takes place in Fort Fairfield, celebrates the state's rich agricultural heritage and the importance of the potato industry to Maine's economy.
4. On September 18, 1989, the Great Maine Balloon Race took place in Lewiston-Auburn. The event, which attracts balloonists from all over the world, features hot air balloon flights, a parade, entertainment, and other festivities.
5. In 2015, the Maine State House underwent restoration and renovation work to preserve the historic building for future generations. The project included upgrades to the building's mechanical and electrical systems, as well as repairs to the roof, windows, and exterior masonry.
