1. In 1885, the famous gunfighter and lawman Bat Masterson arrived in Texas to begin serving as sheriff of Ford County. Masterson was known as a master gunfighter and had earned a reputation for his bravery and quick thinking.

2. In 1904, the city of Houston was hit by a major flood that caused extensive damage and loss of life. The flood was caused by heavy rains that fell over a prolonged period of time, causing water to overflow the banks of the Buffalo Bayou.

3. On September 19, 1960, the University of Texas at Dallas was officially opened. The university had been founded that year by the Texas legislature as a public research institution, and has since become a leading center for technology and innovation.

4. In 1952, the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets participated in their first football game of the season against the University of Houston. The game was held in Houston and was won by the Aggies, 36-6.

5. On September 19, 1863, Union General William Rosecrans defeated Confederate General Braxton Bragg at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia. The battle, which was fought during the American Civil War, ended in a Union victory but resulted in heavy casualties on both sides.
