1. On September 2, 1935, one of the most destructive storms in Florida's history made landfall. Known as the Labor Day Hurricane, it ravaged the Upper Keys, with winds up to 200mph and a storm surge that destroyed nearly every structure on the islands. More than 400 people lost their lives in the hurricane.

2. On September 2, 1945, World War II officially ended with the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. This momentous event marked the end of a devastating war that had a profound impact on Florida's economy and military presence.

3. In 1963, the first phase of Walt Disney World Resort opened in Orlando, Florida. Though the full resort would not be completed until several years later, the opening of Disney's Magic Kingdom marked the beginning of a new era for tourism in the state.

4. On September 2, 2004, Hurricane Frances made landfall in Florida, becoming one of four major hurricanes to impact the state that year. With sustained winds of up to 105mph, the storm caused significant damage across the central and eastern portions of the state.

5. In 2019, September 2 marked the start of the Florida Gubernatorial Fellowship program, which offers graduate students the opportunity to work closely with top-level state officials and gain hands-on experience in Florida politics and government. The program has been in place since 2004 and has helped to train future leaders in the state.
