1. In 1864, Union troops under Major General Sterling Price clashed with Confederate forces in the Battle of Pilot Knob. The Union victory helped secure St. Louis and paved the way for Union control of Missouri.

2. On September 20, 1881, Chester A. Arthur, the 21st President of the United States, visited St. Louis to attend the dedication of the new Merchants Exchange Building. Arthur had taken office just a year earlier following the assassination of James Garfield.

3. In 1948, the University of Missouri played its first football game as a member of the Big Seven Conference. The Tigers defeated the Iowa State Cyclones 40-0.

4. On September 20, 1950, the USS Missouri was commissioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The battleship famously served as the site of the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II.

5. In 1974, the St. Louis Cardinals clinched their second straight National League East division title with a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals went on to win the National League pennant but lost to the Oakland Athletics in the World Series.
