4. On September 20, 1950, the USS Missouri was commissioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The battleship famously served as the site of the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II.

5. In 1974, the St. Louis Cardinals clinched their second straight National League East division title with a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals went on to win the National League pennant but lost to the Oakland Athletics in the World Series.
