1. In 1806, Indiana territorial Governor William Henry Harrison signed an act to establish the Indiana Medical Society, the first professional medical organization in the state.

2. On September 23, 1846, the Indiana state flag was adopted by the General Assembly. The flag features a field of blue with a gold torch and stars, and was designed by Paul Hadley of Mooresville, Indiana.

3. In 1938, Famous Hoosier author James Whitcomb Riley's former home in Indianapolis was opened as a museum on September 23. The James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home is now a National Historic Landmark.

4. On September 23, 1952, Indiana University officially opened the first remodeled portion of Memorial Stadium. The stadium, located in Bloomington, was built in honor of the servicemen and women killed in World War I.
