1. On September 23, 1739, the Stono Rebellion, one of the largest slave rebellions in colonial America, occurred in South Carolina. A group of about 20 slaves, led by an Angolan named Jemmy, stole firearms and ammunition from a store and killed several whites before being captured by the local militia.

4. The South Carolina State Fair typically begins during the last week of September, and September 23 is often the opening day of the fair. The South Carolina State Fair has been held annually since 1869 and features rides, games, livestock exhibitions, and other attractions.
5. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo made landfall near Charleston, South Carolina on September 22-23, causing extensive damage and 35 deaths in the state. The storm was one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the South Carolina coast, with sustained winds of 135 mph and a storm surge of up to 20 feet.
