1. In 1908, the first public library in Des Moines was opened on September 24. It was located in the City Hall and was called the "Des Moines Public Library". Today, it is known as the Des Moines Public Library and has several branches throughout the city.

2. In 1929, the first irrigation district in Iowa was established on September 24. The district was created to provide water for crops in the southwestern part of the state. Today, there are several irrigation districts in Iowa that provide water for agriculture.

3. On September 24, 1934, the first class of nursing students graduated from the University of Iowa College of Nursing. The program was started in 1923 and has since become one of the top nursing programs in the country.

4. In 1966, the Iowa Historical Society announced on September 24 that it had acquired the birthplace of Herbert Hoover in West Branch. The site is now a National Historic Site and includes the cottage where Hoover was born, a museum, and a research library.

5. The first Ames Silversmithing Workshop was held on September 24, 1973, in Ames. The workshop was organized by the Iowa State University Department of Art and Design and was led by nationally recognized silversmiths. Today, the Department of Art and Design at Iowa State University continues to offer workshops and classes in silversmithing and other forms of metalworking.
