1) In 1839, the University of Michigan officially opened its doors with its first class of six students. Today, the university is one of the largest and most prestigious public research universities in the world.
2) In 1910, the Detroit Tigers clinched their first American League pennant, setting the stage for their first World Series championship the following month. The Tigers have won four championships in their history.
3) In 1955, the Michigan State Police officially began using radar to enforce speed limits on state highways. Prior to this, officers would use stopwatches and other methods to estimate speeds of vehicles.
4) In 1995, the Michigan-based company Kellogg's introduced the world to Frosted Mini-Wheats, a popular breakfast cereal featuring crunchy wheat biscuit pieces coated in sweet frosting.
5) In 2012, the Detroit Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 20-13, marking their first win in the newly-built Ford Field. The stadium, which replaced the old Tiger Stadium, is now home to the Lions as well as other events and concerts.
