1. In 1825, Jedediah Smith became the first American to enter Nevada, crossing the southern tip of the state while on a trapping expedition. Smith's route would later become known as the Old Spanish Trail.
2. The town of Goldfield was founded on September 27, 1902, after prospectors discovered gold in the area. The town quickly grew into one of the largest cities in Nevada, with a population of over 20,000 residents at its peak in the early 1900s.
3. On this day in 1925, the state of Nevada officially adopted the state flag, which features a blue background, a silver star, and the words "Nevada" and "Battle Born." The design was chosen after a statewide contest, and was first flown at the Nevada State Fair in Reno.
4. In 1967, the landmark casino hotel Caesars Palace opened on the Las Vegas Strip. The hotel's luxurious amenities and high-end entertainment quickly made it a popular destination for celebrities and high rollers.
5. The Nevada State Museum in Carson City officially opened on September 27, 1941. The museum features exhibits on the state's natural history, geology, and mining industry, as well as displays on Native American culture and early pioneers.
