2. In 1777, a group of Native Americans led by the Shawnee chief Cornstalk attacked the Fort Randolph settlement on the Ohio River in present-day Mason County, West Virginia. The attack resulted in the deaths of several settlers and soldiers, including the fort's commander, Captain Matthew Arbuckle.

3. On September 27, 1969, the West Virginia University Mountaineers football team defeated the University of North Carolina Tar Heels in a thrilling 17-15 victory. 4. In 1898, the town of Ceredo, West Virginia was incorporated. The town was founded by Civil War veteran Eli Thayer as part of his plan to create a series of model towns along the Ohio River that would be free of slavery.
