1. On September 28, 1776, General George Washington and the Continental Army were forced to retreat after losing the Battle of Germantown in Philadelphia during the American Revolutionary War.

2. On September 28, 1868, the Central Pennsylvania African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was founded in Harrisburg. It was the first African American church established in the city.

3. On September 28, 1907, the first automobile race was held at the Philadelphia Fairgrounds. The race featured 45 drivers and was won by Lewis Strang in a 50-horsepower Pope-Toledo.
