1. The Vermont State Fair, one of the oldest and largest fairs in the state, begins annually on September 28. The fair has been held in Rutland, Vermont since 1846 and features a variety of attractions, including livestock exhibits, carnival rides, and agricultural competitions.

2. On September 28, 1775, the Green Mountain Boys, led by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold, captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British. The capture of the fort provided the American rebels with much-needed artillery and supplies, and was a significant victory early in the American Revolution.

3. Plymouth, Vermont, birthplace of Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States, holds its annual Plymouth Folk and Blues Festival on September 28. The festival features live music, food, and crafts, and celebrates the rich musical heritage of the state.

4. On September 28, 1874, the University of Vermont opened its doors to students for the first time, with a class of just 33 men. Today, the university has more than 10,000 students and offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

5. The Vermont Dairy Festival, also known as the "Cheese Festival," takes place in Enosburg Falls every June, but the festival parade is traditionally held on the Saturday closest to September 28. The parade features floats, marching bands, and of course, plenty of dairy products, including ice cream, cheese, and milk.
