1. On September 29, 1789, George Washington visited Wilmington, Delaware during his tour of the southern states. He was welcomed by a large crowd and attended a public dinner in his honor. Washington stayed overnight at the Golden Fleece Inn, which no longer exists.

2. In 1827, the Lewes & Rehoboth Canal Company was incorporated on September 29. This canal connected the Delaware Bay with the Rehoboth Bay and made transportation of goods and people much easier between the two areas.

3. Wilmington, Delaware's first fire engine, the "Delaware," was put into service on September 29, 1830. This state-of-the-art engine was capable of pumping up to 200 gallons of water per minute and was pulled by 12 horses.

4. On September 29, 1959, the Delaware Memorial Bridge opened to traffic. This suspension bridge spans the Delaware River between Delaware and New Jersey and is named in honor of soldiers from Delaware who died in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

5. In 1977, the University of Delaware's football team played their first game under the newly-installed lights at Delaware Stadium on September 29. The Fighting Blue Hens defeated the Colgate Raiders 27-7 in front of a crowd of over 17,000 spectators. The lights allowed for night games to be played at the stadium for the first time.
