1. On September 29, 1875, the Detroit Free Press published the first photographs ever taken of the Detroit Tigers baseball team. The Tigers, originally called the Detroit Wolverines, were just starting out in the newly-formed National League at the time. The photos captured the team in action during a game against the St. Louis Browns.

2. The Mackinac Bridge, connecting Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas, officially opened to traffic on September 29, 1957. At the time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Today, it remains one of Michigan's most iconic landmarks and a major tourist attraction.

3. The Michigan State Police was officially established on September 29, 1917. The force was created to provide statewide law enforcement services and combat organized crime, and it has since grown into one of the largest and most respected law enforcement agencies in the country.

4. On September 29, 1864, a group of Chippewa Indians signed the Treaty of Washington with the United States government. The treaty ceded a large portion of Chippewa lands in Michigan to the government in exchange for various financial and other benefits.

5. Michigan native Dan Gurney won the inaugural Formula One race held at Watkins Glen on September 29, 1961. Gurney, who began his racing career at the age of 19, went on to become one of the most successful drivers in motorsports history. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 86.
