1. In 1861, Nebraska become the 37th state in the US. The state was carved out of the Nebraska Territory which itself became the territory on May 30, 1854.

2. In 1927, the first conference of the Nebraska Association of Colored Women was held in Omaha. The group aimed to improve conditions for black women and their families in the state and worked on issues such as voting rights, education, and equal pay.

3. In 1954, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln opened the first public television station in the state. The station, KUON-TV, began broadcasting with limited hours and programming but later expanded to become Nebraska's largest network, NET.

4. In 1978, a tornado touched down in Kearney, Nebraska killing two people and injuring dozens. The tornado was part of a larger system that swept across the Midwest causing extensive damage in several states.

5. In 2007, Nebraska celebrated its 150th anniversary of statehood with a year-long series of events and activities. The festivities included a traveling exhibit, special performances, and a commemorative stamp.
