2. On September 30, 1777, the Battle of Stillwater took place during the American Revolution. While the battle actually took place in New York, it involved New Hampshire soldiers who fought with American forces against the British.
3. In 1893, on September 30, Concord became the first city in the world to have a fully operational waterworks system that used a slow sand filtration process.
4. On September 30, 1951, the state of New Hampshire officially adopted its state motto, "Live Free or Die."
5. In 1946, on September 30th, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard launched the USS Salem, a heavy cruiser that served in the Korean War. The ship is now a museum in Quincy, Massachusetts.
