1. In 1774, the first Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to organize colonial resistance to British rule. Although Georgia did not send representatives to this meeting, it was a significant event in the lead-up to the Revolutionary War.

2. In 1836, the Cherokee Nation signed the Treaty of New Echota, which ceded their lands in Georgia and other southeastern states in exchange for land in present-day Oklahoma. This treaty was controversial and ultimately led to the forced removal of the Cherokee on the Trail of Tears.

3. In 1864, Union troops under General William T. Sherman seized Atlanta during the Civil War after a lengthy siege. This victory was a turning point in the war and set the stage for Sherman's famous "March to the Sea."

4. In 1907, Julius Rosenwald, a philanthropist and president of Sears, Roebuck and Company, established the Rosenwald Fund to support the education of African Americans in the South. The fund helped build thousands of schools and supported the work of educators like Booker T. Washington.

5. In 1978, Georgia Governor George Busbee announced that the state would begin construction on a new airport to replace the aging Hartsfield International Airport. The new airport, named Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, opened in 1980 and is now one of the busiest airports in the world.
