1. In 1901, the town of Lawton in southwestern Oklahoma was founded on September 6, named after General Henry W. Lawton, a hero of the Spanish-American War. Lawton would go on to become a major hub for military activity and was home to Fort Sill, a United States Army installation.

2. On September 6, 1921, the city of Tulsa experienced one of the worst race massacres in United States history when a mob of white residents attacked the predominantly Black Greenwood district. The attack, which lasted for 16 hours, resulted in the destruction of more than 35 city blocks and the deaths of an estimated 300 Black residents.
