1. In 1836, Sam Houston was elected as the first president of the Republic of Texas. Houston, a key figure in the Texas Revolution, served as president until 1838 and again from 1841 to 1844.
2. On September 6, 1901, President William McKinley was assassinated while visiting the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. McKinley, who was born in Ohio but had strong ties to Texas, had served as the 25th president of the United States since 1897.
3. In 1930, oil was discovered near the town of Henderson, Texas. The discovery led to a boom in oil production in East Texas and helped to establish Texas as one of the leading oil-producing states in the country.
4. On September 6, 1961, the University of Texas at Dallas was founded. The university, which is located in Richardson, Texas, is part of the University of Texas System and offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.
5. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas and caused widespread damage and destruction. Although the hurricane did not directly impact Texas, many Texans responded to the disaster by donating money and resources to help those affected by the storm.
